Social-local: The next frontier in connecting a business with its customers

Friday, May 18th, 2012 by David Gibson

Sam Walton had it right – the old retail model where the local store owner knew everyone in town, knew their likes and dislikes, and knew what they were going to buy almost before the customer did – really works.  And Wal-Mart is using social media to bring this old retail model into the age of smartphones.

Wal-Mart has created thousands of Facebook pages, one for each of its brick and mortar locations.  At each location, key employees who have received some training in how to manage social media maintain the pages and interact with their local customers.  While the emphasis is certainly on letting customers know about specials or new products, the local Wal-Mart employees are also able to engage their neighbors in discussions about local events, sports news, or other items of interest.

According to a report published by Mainstay Salire, local Facebook pages already outperform corporate pages by a factor of 40 (their infographic shown below summarizes their findings).  This success hasn’t gone unnoticed as other companies, including Home Depot and Quiznos, have begun rolling out their local Facebook pages as well.

You might feel great that your corporate Facebook page has hundreds of thousands of fans but it seems like the real place to engage customers is on the local level.  Here’s a link to an AdAge article with more information on this topic.

How Foursquare Lists Can Benefit Your Business

Monday, August 15th, 2011 by admin

Beginning today, Foursquare has officially rolled out its new Lists feature. With the launch of this new capability, it makes finding and sharing different places in your location that much easier. Not only will this benefit individual users, but businesses as well.

Foursquare now suggests lists based on users’ previous check-ins, making it easier to find and explore locations they may be interested in. Developing these lists are now much faster and easier to create and share.  If you would prefer to create your own, Foursquare has also made this easier to do by auto-completing locations based on what you type in.

For businesses, this new feature is a great element to support those with brick-and-mortar locations, or those striving to be viewed as a resource in their community. For example, business can create a compiled list of all of their locations around the country  so users can follow that list in one easy place; on the other hand, businesses can create their own list of various places in their area that could attract a larger audience of users, ultimately bringing them into the forefront of users’ minds, building a deeper relationship and placing their business as a reference for localized hot spots in their area.

These Foursquare Lists have been created to more deeply connect everything that takes place on the location-based platform. This new feature gives users and businesses the opportunity to explore their surrounding places more easily, together.

Foursquare to Begin Remarketing Daily Deals

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 by Shaun Campos

Foursquare, Foursquare, Foursquare. I use you every day. I check in to you at work, when I get my coffee and lunch, at the gym and at the movies. Where are my rewards though? I’ve only received about 2-3 since I’ve joined over a year ago.

Well apparently I’m not the only one not finding it useful for deals, because according to the WSJ, Foursquare is having trouble making revenue through their merchant platform. Not enough merchants, not enough deals.

More than just badges, Foursquare will be sending you daily deals now via partners.

Their answer to bring in more revenue? Beginning today, look for Foursquare to begin remarketing daily coupon deals from sites like LivingSocial, Gilt Groupe, and AT&T. With a user base of 10 million, the audience is there. A deal with Groupon could be in the works, too.

This could be big and quite useful for Foursquare users. Think about all the data they have on everyone like me who’s been checking in everyday without converting on a mayorship or loyalty reward. This data could make for some highly targeted daily deal remarketing based on places of interest. According to Business Insider, the partnership will allow Foursquare to do just that – alert you of nearby venues that have deals. The user gets a deal, and Foursquare gets a cut. Win-win for everybody!

Hat tip to About Foursquare on the story.
